How to Start as a Fire Watch in Canada

Prepare for hot-work watch assignments without confusing orientation, fire response and employer authorization.

What a fire watch is there to do A fire watch monitors the designated hot work area and relevant surrounding areas for fire hazards under the employer's procedures. CCOHS hot work guidance explains why monitoring can be needed during work, during breaks and after hot work finishes. Do not assume one universal post work watch duration applies to every job. The permit, applicable requirements, conditions and responsible person's assessment determine the assignment. This guide does not authorize hot work or replace a permit. Establish the employer's requirements Before buying a course, ask which training is accepted and whether practical instruction, extinguisher training or other competencies are required. Check whether the job is specifically Fire Watch or a combined role with separately defined responsibilities. An entry level applicant should emphasize reliability, attention, communication and willingness to follow the site's instructions. Prepare examples of noticing a hazard and reporting it appropriately. Do not claim firefighting or rescue qualifications because you completed a general safety orientation. Ask the right onboarding questions Clarify the area you are responsible for, how to contact the work crew and emergency team, when work must stop, and who provides relief. Ask how the permit's monitoring period is communicated and how the end of your assignment is confirmed. Do not leave an active assignment without following the site's relief procedure. Fire response must remain within your training, equipment and employer's emergency arrangements. Do not improvise a rescue or attempt to manage a fire beyond those limits.
