Canada opens new workforce fund for skilled-labour shortages

A new federal workforce fund is targeting training, certification and skills gaps in sectors including energy infrastructure and critical minerals.

The Government of Canada opened a continuous intake for the Sectoral Workforce Innovation Fund in late August 2026. The program is designed to support workforce projects responding to skilled-labour shortages and changing sector needs.

For industrial workers, the practical signal is increased emphasis on faster training, micro-credentials, skills assessment and targeted certification. Energy infrastructure, critical minerals, advanced manufacturing and other priority sectors are specifically identified as areas where workers may need to transition or upgrade skills.

For employers, the fund creates another channel for industry-led partnerships that can improve recruiting, training and retention. Eligible projects can receive up to $10 million for initiatives lasting up to 36 months, with continuous intake running while funds remain available.

WrenchRoster will track programs that materially affect Canadian skilled trades, industrial hiring and worker readiness. Workers should still verify eligibility and program requirements directly with the official source before making training or career decisions.
