Alberta adds 23,000 jobs as Canadian employment falls in September

Statistics Canada's September survey shows divergent regional conditions: national employment fell by 68,000 while Alberta gained 23,000 jobs.

Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey, released October 9, 2026, reports that Canadian employment fell by 68,000 in September. The national unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage points to 6.5%. These figures describe September conditions, not employment changes during October.

Alberta moved in the opposite direction, adding 23,000 jobs, or 0.9%, while its unemployment rate fell 0.4 percentage points to 6.4%. Nationally, manufacturing employment declined by 13,000. Employment in the broad other-services category, which includes repair and maintenance alongside personal and household services, increased by 17,000.

WrenchRoster perspective: national headlines alone do not describe the market for a particular trade or worksite. Alberta's overall gain does not establish that oilfield, mining or camp employers added the same number of positions. Workers can compare the regional signal with current vacancies and their qualifications; employers can use it as context alongside their own applicant and hiring data.
