How to Become a Boilermaker in Canada

What this trade involves Boilermakers fabricate, assemble, install and maintain equipment such as boilers, tanks, heat exchangers and pressure vessels. Industrial construction and maintenance are relevant settings. This is not the same occupation as operating a boiler as a power engineer, and it is not a substitute for a welder's particular performance qualification. A practical entry route 1. Read the official profile for the province where you intend to work. In Alberta, start with Trade Secrets designated trades. 2. Ask prospective employers or apprenticeship training organizations whether they are recruiting registered apprentices, accepting new entrants, or requiring experienced certified workers. 3. Confirm who will sponsor and supervise your training before assuming a helper job will count toward an apprenticeship. 4. Prepare education records and any previous trade training for the authority's assessment. Do not describe unassessed overseas experience as Canadian certification. Prepare for an industrial employer Explain the equipment and settings you have actually worked with: vessel assembly, installation, maintenance or shutdown support. Distinguish assisting a qualified worker from independently performing a task. Employers may ask about drawing interpretation, tools, access at height and work inside equipment; any hazardous assignment still needs appropriate training, authorization and site controls. Ask for the project dates, apprentice level, pay basis, rotation, travel arrangements and required training in writing. A shutdown rate is not a guarantee of year round earnings.
