How to Start as a Rigger in Canada

Understand rigging responsibilities, supervised entry and the difference between a course and lift authorization.

Load characteristics, equipment specifications, the worksite and applicable requirements must be evaluated by the responsible qualified people. Build a credible entry route Ask prospective employers what training, assessed experience and supervision they require for the specific role. Clarify whether you are applying as a helper, a supervised trainee or an experienced rigger. Do not assume a short awareness course qualifies you for complex lifts. Obtain the exact course or qualification requirement before purchasing training. Where rigging forms part of another trade, ask how that trade's training and your assigned rigging responsibilities relate. A rigger course does not make you a crane operator or automatically qualify you as a lift planner. Show the employer what you know Describe the kinds of work you have genuinely supported and your level of responsibility. Distinguish assisting a team, inspecting equipment within an assigned scope, signalling and planning. Use references or training records where available, without uploading confidential lift plans or client drawings to your profile. Ask who plans and supervises lifts, how competency is assessed, which communication system the site uses and what additional training the project requires.
