How to Start as a Spotter in Canada
Understand equipment-signalling responsibilities and prepare for site-specific training and communication requirements.
A spotter is an assigned communication role A spotter or signal person communicates with equipment operators during movements or lifts, including situations involving restricted visibility. CCOHS heavy equipment guidance explains the role of signalling, competence and site communication procedures. An equipment spotter is not automatically a traffic control person authorized to control public road traffic, a rigger or a crane operator. Ask what the actual assignment includes before deciding which training is appropriate. Prepare for entry and assessment Ask employers what signal person training, practical assessment and site specific orientation they require. Confirm whether the job involves reversing vehicles, moving mobile equipment, crane signalling or another context. Different assignments may need different competence and authorization. Prepare examples of following agreed instructions, maintaining attention and communicating clearly. Do not describe general labour experience as independent signalling experience unless you were actually trained and assigned that responsibility. Ask how new workers are supervised and how the employer assesses readiness. Questions to resolve before work Clarify who directs the movement, the communication method, what happens if communication is lost, and how exclusion areas and safe positions are established. The specific protocol must come from the employer's procedure and trained supervision, not an improvised set of gestures learned from a career article. Ask what other tasks, if any, may be performed without interfering with the spotting assignment. Confirm shifts, travel, weather exposure and required protective equipment. Work only within the role and equipment context for which you have been trained and authorized. Show accurate experience on WrenchRoster Select Spotter when it matches the vacancy. Describe the equipment contexts and training you genuinely know, keep documents readable and update availability. A reviewed training document is not permission to direct a particular movement on a new site. Read the Equipment Operator guide, the Rigger guide and worker profile setup. WrenchRoster is a recruitment platform, not a signal person licensing authority or a substitute for the employer's assessment.
